Canned food and clones, or Where is the new classic
They say: they don’t argue about tastes. But to be honest – I never understood the meaning of this expression. How can you argue about tastes? “My taste is tastier”? “There is a taste! – No taste! Well, bring ten proofs of the existence of taste! “Taste, like the Lord God, is a transcendental entity!” Some kind of nonsense, verbiage … And if someone says that he hates this or that musician, and I, for example, love him very much, then there is no reason to argue at all. You – love, I – no, and love is inexplicable thing, and if explainable, then this is not love at all, but marriage of convenience, with all due respect.
A few reasons for this column. Firstly, a new year, a new decade of the 21st century. The results themselves are requested. But that is in general; in particular, for example, Danny Lane arrives in Russia with a band “cover” … Creedence Clearwater Revival. Here to go nuts – what is the connection? Danny Lane – the story itself, co-creator of the bright and enjoyable (argue with me!) Paul McCartney’s album “Band on the Run”. I really hope that for such a cool dude, the tribute group is just a joke, and not a way to stay afloat during the sluggish Brexit. But in itself such a “personnel decision” is, of course, a rubicon in a certain sense.
We live, generally speaking, in an interesting era. On the one hand, total retromania and endless re-utilization of past achievements put on stream (I touched on this issue in the previous column). On the other hand, everyone understands that now is not the 68th year and not even the 72nd, and they are trying to create something new. But – new according to old recipes. As in the Middle Ages: the thought that has already been expressed by saints, church fathers and other authorities of the past is good. Want to say something your own – quote deftly the predecessor! Who also quoted someone … But what exactly happens in human tastes? Here, the truth is something new, and there is something to argue about. Masses of groups and just solo bluesmen are brought to Moscow, and the press releases always say about the spirit of that; “Cool kneading Led Zeppelin riffs with South rock sound” and the like. Continuing the conversation. Recently in Moscow, Rival Sons performed. Such direct traditionalists, heirs of the great rock tradition, who played in the same Moscow as the opening act for Black Sabbath … Yes, the sound is “true”, the songs themselves are a matter of taste. And last year, everyone rushed with the group Greta van Fleet – a kind of simple boogie songs in the sound of zeppelins. Interesting? Of course, like a curiosity. For five to ten minutes. And many years ago there were such – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They were recorded strictly on tube equipment, on tape (when it was not yet mainstream), the design of compact discs was stylized under vinyl in every way. Very cool done, visually and audibly, but to listen, in my unenlightened view, is dreary. This is a personal opinion and value judgment, and by the way, I personally knew real BRMC fans who considered the group a real revival of the “garage”, bit psychedelia, proto-punk, that’s all. In general, clone groups divide the music lover community in two. Opponents believe that “boring”, “this already happened.” To summarize: it’s boring because it already happened. Defenders – well done, high-quality, one-on-one, and if so – it means here it is, the revival of rock, punk, garage, God knows what else. Rock fans resemble elderly musicologists who go to concerts with musical scores: they compare the performance with the musical text. Rock music in general resembles the classics, as it was interpreted in the second half of the 20th century. Then a critical amount of good-outstanding-great masterpiece recordings had already accumulated, and it seemed: it was necessary to play this and that only. That is, the conservatoire, excuse the bad pun, really – they canned it. Despite the fact that the old and seemingly more conservative jazz has completely different trends. The musicians seemed to be peddling. The late albums of any arrogant dudes with a name like Donnie McCaslin or Christian Scott aTunde – do not understand that in genre terms! A mixture based on post-bop: rap, broken rhythms, noise, ethnic … Yes, and texts reminiscent of some kind of philosophical “runs” and “carts”. No, of course, there are copyists in jazz who take all the notes and strokes of some great album by Miles Davis or John Coltrane for nothing, but this goes along the lines of funny things. Well, good. I personally do not need canned food or clones. And so – a matter of taste, of course.
