New decade: what awaits rock musicians and their fans
Over the past 5 years, the industry has managed to “bury” and “resurrect” rock music and guitar several times. It was different. They explained to us that rock and roll was a thing of the past, then it turned out that it was still far from oblivion. Researchers have learned that rock musicians live less than others, but they have proved that the most brutal styles of music are harmless. Statisticians told us that rock still remains at the peak of popularity among vinillers, and Chinese scientists have determined that rock music is dangerous for drivers …
In general, despite some bold statements, the genre is still interesting, discussed and quite alive. What to expect from the rock industry in 2020 and in general in the coming years? Let’s try to look into the future. Rival and reunions It is no secret that the last decade has pleased many music lovers with interesting projects, the philosophy of which was “a return to the roots.” One of the most high-profile events was the group Greta Van Fleet, which everyone compares with the legendary Led Zeppelin. And there are a lot of similar teams praising hard rock and blues. Of the less well-known, the Irish are The Answer and, for example, the trio of Jared James Nichols. Thus, for quite a long time, we have been witnessing a revival of styles that were popular in the 70s. This applies, by the way, to heavy metal. Take, for example, the Ghost group – the producers of Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult and Mercyful Fate combined would have envied such a project at one time.
If we talk about groups of the past, it turns out that many of their musicians are still full of energy and are eager for battle. More recently, it became known that John Frusciante returned to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the already mentioned Blue Öyster Cult announced a new album, and Dokken are going on tour with George Lynch. What can I say if mastodons like Ozzy and Keith Richards continue to create, promising to soon please fans with new albums. Popular rock bands, of course, understand that a short (or big) break and return to the stage helps to raise the listener’s interest and earn money. In any case, most music lovers like reunions, even if everything was done primarily because of money. A great future for young rockers Such teams as Greta Van Fleet have just begun to gain momentum – the next few years will become the most interesting and difficult for them. Young, but already experienced rockers will be in demand at major music festivals, which will lead to the birth of new rock idols. This has already happened before, so no doubt. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Royal Blood, Badflower, The Blue Stones, Bad Wolves – here are some diverse examples of rock bands that can have a great future. Considering that big festivals and beloved young musicians attract new young people with incredible speed fans, you can count on the imminent appearance of the next wave of youth “fashion” for rock and guitar. History is cyclical. The mixing of genres Not all fans like this course of events, but there is nowhere to go – the concept of “modern rock” implies an incredible mixture of all styles: rock, folk, jazz, rap, speed metal … In the future, this trend will only develop. Do you know why this is good? Because such freedom makes it possible to experiment without fear to go beyond the scope of their genre. Experiments with sound, as the history of rock music has shown, often lead to breakthroughs. If you look from the other side, many of the current “rockers”, being completely free, are becoming more and more like pop artists. Many years ago, precisely for this, the rollings scolded the Beatles. Take, for example, the Imagine Dragons group. This team has more in common with pop artists than with rockers: song structure, performance, appearance. What kind of real rocker would like to hear about his favorite genre from morning to night on radio and TV? Moreover, pop is called rock, and performers of such music are given national prizes. Multinationality and gender equality Nowadays, more and more previously unknown groups are becoming in demand. It is about hundreds of young musicians around the world. The Internet, social networks and streaming services will make everyone equal in their creative rights. “A young white guy with a guitar” – this is how we looked like a typical rock musician a few years ago. Now anyone can become a rock star. An Asian girl, an elderly Indian, a teenager from the hinterland – any person, regardless of his age, gender and nationality, can change the history of rock. The industry understands the situation, taking the right steps for itself. Fender, for example, has announced a large line of signature guitars from female musicians. How successful the idea will be, time will tell, but it is highly likely that Fender got to the point. Streaming One of the most controversial phenomena of the modern music industry was streaming. Online services, on the one hand, provide unprecedented opportunities for many young performers, but on the other hand make the life of musicians more difficult.
